TRAXXAS / 58234-8 / RESEARCH-LED REVIEW

Traxxas Slash 2WD XL-5 review

A battery-inclusive brushed short-course truck for learning rear-drive lines. Its practical package is appealing, but grass, charging input power and future conversion spending need checking.

THE OVERVIEW

The Slash 2WD XL-5 is for the buyer who wants to learn rear-drive off-road driving without assembling the electronics or painting a shell first. Model 58234-8 includes a NiMH battery and USB-C charger, which makes its car price more informative than the price of a battery-free RTR. My reservation is the usual one with a two-wheel-drive short-course truck: a grassy yard is not automatically a useful course, and a brushless conversion can turn an economical first purchase into an expensive intermediate project.

A first short-course truck with the charging decision mostly settled.

The exact package matters. Traxxas sells several Slash vehicles, including four-wheel-drive models, brushless versions, oval cars and assembly kits. This review covers the blue complete 58234-8 returned by Amazon's Creators API. It is a brushed, rear-driven truck, with fitted radio equipment and a finished clipless body. A replacement shell carrying the Slash name would plainly not deliver that package. The verified ASIN is the identity anchor for the affiliate link, while the official page and manual establish the mechanical facts.

Think of this Slash as an introduction to driving a line rather than buying a speed number. You can mark a modest circuit, practice braking before a corner and learn how throttle changes the rear tires' workload. There is no need to buy a competition chassis to discover whether that is enjoyable. Conversely, a buyer who already knows the desired race class should check the organizer's rules first. Ready-To-Race is Traxxas branding, not a guarantee that this exact configuration is eligible for every track.

The missing piece may be the wall adapter already in your drawer.

Traxxas documents an assembled Slash, TQ transmitter, Titan 12T 550 motor, XL-5 controller, 3000mAh seven-cell 8.4V NiMH battery and four-amp USB-C charger. The finished body, wheels, tires and steering equipment are installed. That is a coherent starting package for a household with no existing RC power equipment. There is no separate motor-selection, soldering or shell-painting assignment before the first outing. The included maintenance tools also give the owner a way to perform the basic checks described in the instructions.

You still need four AA alkaline cells for the transmitter and a suitable USB-C power source. Traxxas recommends its 45-watt adapter and corresponding cable. Check the charging instructions against the adapter you intend to use; a USB-C connector alone does not establish available power. A low-powered phone supply might not give the charger the intended charging rate. Treat the drive battery, charger and power supply as three different items in your inventory instead of assuming the word charger includes a mains plug.

For the first setup, place the truck where you can inspect it comfortably. Read the startup sequence, charge the supplied pack as directed, install the transmitter cells and check the radio with the wheels clear of the surface. Verify that steering and throttle operate in the expected direction. This is a small amount of setup, but it has a purpose: an assembled vehicle can still arrive with a loose wheel, a trapped lead or a trim setting that needs attention. Make the first drive a control check before adding jumps.

Before the first session

  • Use the supplied battery and its intended charging route for the first baseline.
  • Supply four AA transmitter cells.
  • Follow the exact manual for chemistry settings, startup sequence and free steering checks.
  • Begin with conservative controls and an open stopping area.

Rear drive teaches throttle discipline without extra front driveline hardware.

The Titan 12T 550 feeds a Magnum 272 transmission, a slipper clutch and a planetary rear differential. Only the rear wheels drive the truck. The practical attraction is a relatively legible power path: motor, pinion, spur, transmission and rear driveshafts. A newcomer can follow an exploded drawing and identify these assemblies without also tracing a center shaft into a front gearbox. Mechanical simplicity is a buying advantage here, though it does not make the vehicle maintenance-free or establish a lower measured failure rate.

The slipper clutch is a controlled slipping interface in the drivetrain. Its setting belongs in the maintenance plan because an overly loose clutch wastes drive, while an inappropriate tight setting removes the relief the manufacturer intended. Follow the model manual rather than copying a setting from a modified internet build. Likewise, keep the stock gearing initially. A speed pinion changes the load on a brushed motor, and repeatedly accelerating through thick grass is a different job from a brief pass on an open paved area.

Traxxas advertises more than 30mph with the seven-cell battery; we have not measured it. That figure should not choose your practice space or dictate how soon to change the electronics. The useful stock-package question is whether the supplied power lets you practice on the intended ground. If you already require brushless power, budget the full conversion before ordering. A new motor and controller may be only the beginning of the purchase once battery equipment and drivetrain choices enter the picture. Compare a complete factory brushless vehicle at that point.

Training Mode is a useful way to make the first circuit smaller.

The TQ 2.4GHz radio is a two-channel system for steering and throttle. The XL-5 offers Sport, Race and Training profiles. Training reduces forward and reverse output while retaining braking, and Race removes reverse. Those are practical distinctions for a beginner: the control profile can match a careful introduction or a session where backing up is unnecessary. This Slash does not include Traxxas Stability Management, so do not expect the radio to correct a slide merely because other Traxxas vehicles advertise that assistance.

Start with a reduced-power profile and a route that includes somewhere to stop. A tidy oval with a clear braking area is more instructive than driving repeatedly toward a fence and hoping the brakes save the session. Practice the trigger's neutral point and learn the controller's brake-to-reverse behavior. Use the manual's procedure to change profiles; counting the correct LED sequence is easier on a quiet workbench than beside a truck already aimed at an obstacle. Finish with the prescribed shutdown sequence and disconnect the drive battery.

NiMH and LiPo use require the correct controller settings. The supplied NiMH route is useful precisely because you can begin without researching every battery chemistry at once. If you later fit a compatible two-cell LiPo, establish the right low-voltage setting and use appropriate balance-charging equipment. A battery upgrade is an operating-system change as well as a purchase. Our package rating rewards documented beginner controls; it does not claim a particular throttle feel, radio range or braking distance from a personal test we have not performed.

Adjust the truck you have before ordering a different one.

The official specifications identify a 2075 digital steering servo and independent suspension with oil-filled Ultra Shocks. The shocks provide a useful starting point for learning ride height and suspension behavior. Begin by checking that both front wheels return freely, the servo is centered and the truck tracks acceptably on a level surface. Use steering trim to correct a small neutral offset, while remembering that trim cannot repair a bent link, jammed steering assembly or tires rubbing an incorrectly seated body.

The broad short-course shell can make it less obvious what the front wheels are doing, so remove it for the first bench checks. Inspect both sides of the steering travel and look for debris around the linkage. The manufacturer's strengthened suspension pieces are documented equipment, not a reason to drive with binding steering. Once you have a baseline, adjust only the item related to the problem you can describe. If the truck consistently rolls in one corner, first compare entry speed and surface grip before buying springs.

Suspension changes work best when the comparison is repeatable. Mark a corner or small bump and run the same line at similar speed. Note the original settings so you can reverse a change. A rear-drive truck also asks you to separate steering input from excess throttle: more steering lock cannot always solve rear tires that are being asked to accelerate and corner too hard simultaneously. This is an editorial learning recommendation based on the layout. It is not an assertion that the stock servo or suspension has won a handling comparison.

A short-course truck needs a usable yard, not just an outdoor address.

The Slash has enclosed-wheel short-course proportions and tires selected for mixed recreational driving. Traxxas presents it as an off-road truck, but the conditions within that label vary enormously. Firm dirt, compacted gravel and modest uneven ground make more sense for initial practice than loose stones that rise nearly to the chassis. Check the surface at the truck's scale. A patch that looks smooth while standing can contain ruts and roots large enough to steer the vehicle off line or stop it entirely.

Grass deserves a separate decision. Short, dry grass may offer an occasional route, while thick or wet growth can add substantial drag and collect around rotating parts. If most available driving is lawn, compare a monster truck before committing to the short-course shape. Do not try to solve sustained dragging with taller speed gearing. Choose stock gearing, shorter sessions and inspection while learning what the site asks of the motor. The right vehicle is the one that can be used regularly in the space you actually have.

Keep the first jumps low and provide a clear landing area. A generous body and tube-style bumpers are practical features, but we have no crash log to turn those features into a survival promise. Independent seller coverage from Mad Toys and Hobbies describes the current 58234-8 as a broad-use beginner truck; its performance claims remain that seller's account. Our narrower recommendation is deliberate: start on predictable ground, expand the route gradually and let actual use tell you whether another tire or vehicle category is necessary.

Clipless access is useful because inspection should happen often.

The current 58234-8 has a finished clipless short-course body, reinforcement around its retention system and front and rear tube-style bumpers. The hidden mounting is a convenience you will use for charging and inspection. Learn the correct release motion before pulling hard on the shell. A body retained properly is less likely to rub a tire or leave the chassis exposed during a tumble. The official product and chassis photographs show the appearance and access arrangement without borrowing another Slash generation's imagery.

A broad shell also creates places where dirt can accumulate. After a session, remove it and inspect the motor area, driveshafts, suspension and battery compartment. Brush away debris before it becomes the next run's mechanical obstruction. Check wheel nuts, tire bonding and the condition of the battery lead. Oil-filled shocks should be inspected for leakage and bent shafts. These checks are more useful than an arbitrary upgrade shopping list because they address the vehicle's actual condition. Replace damaged parts by the exact drawing and part number.

The waterproof electronics claim needs the manual's conditions. Sealed electronics do not mean the entire truck can be left muddy and wet indefinitely. Dry and maintain it as instructed, and keep charging equipment in its appropriate environment. The published parts list and exploded views make the maintenance process understandable; they do not prove a local shop has every item today. Before buying as a gift, check whether someone nearby can help identify parts. That support can matter more to a new owner than adding decorative aluminum before the first run.

Count the supplied power equipment, then price the actual omissions.

The dated vehicle reference in this review comes from the current official US manufacturer listing. The live Amazon offer is displayed separately with its refresh time. It is a car-package price, not an ownership total. Here the supplied NiMH pack and charger belong in the included column. The required extras are transmitter AA cells and an adequate USB-C adapter and cable if you do not already own them. We have not assigned invented prices to those extras, so the table gives a completion checklist rather than a misleading all-in subtotal.

Separate required equipment from useful workbench supplies. The included tools can begin the maintenance job; better drivers, a cleaning brush and a small parts tray are sensible conveniences if you expect regular use. Spare tires, a second battery and a different body are optional. Avoid buying everything on an accessory page just because the vehicle is upgradeable. The first expenditure after the truck should solve a genuine obstruction to driving, such as an unsuitable power supply, not fill a drawer with replacements that may never be needed.

For a family purchase, charging turnaround affects the experience even without a published runtime promise. One supplied pack means a single battery is available until it has been used and recharged. Decide whether that fits the planned sessions before adding a second pack. If you expect immediate brushless conversion, calculate that alternative route separately and compare it against a factory brushless RTR. The Slash's included charging package earns its value for the owner who will use it; equipment you replace immediately provides much less benefit to your own basket.

Choose the vehicle shape around your ground and your interest.

The ARRMA Gorgon MEGA RTR is a useful complete-vehicle alternative for a buyer drawn to a rear-drive beginner truck. Its reviewed battery-inclusive package supplies a NiMH pack, USB charger and transmitter cells, and its monster-truck tires change the ground-clearance proposition. Compare the exact current SKU and charging requirements rather than using an old launch price. I would put the Gorgon beside the Slash for a lawn-and-dirt household, then decide whether monster proportions or the short-course appearance is more important to the intended owner.

The Traxxas Rustler XL-5 37254-8 takes another route with exposed wheels, a stadium body and the same broad brushed beginner-package concept. It is shorter than the Slash according to the current official dimensions. That is a meaningful storage and course-layout consideration, without claiming that one handles better from an unperformed comparison. If your interest is learning open-wheel lines and you do not need a full short-course shell, the Rustler deserves attention. If the short-course look is why you want an RC truck, that preference has value too.

For four-wheel-drive brushless short-course driving, compare the ARRMA Senton 223S complete RTR and its separate battery-and-charger basket. Four driven wheels and a 2S/3S-capable power system address a different buying brief. They also bring a different price and maintenance layout. We do not present any of these comparisons as lap-time or durability results. The useful choice is whether the Slash's simpler included-power route fits the buyer, or whether paying for another drivetrain and power system from the outset avoids a conversion later.

Buy it to learn rear-drive short-course driving in an equipable package.

I would shortlist the Slash 58234-8 for a first recreational short-course buyer with firm outdoor driving ground and an interest in learning throttle control. The complete assembled car, supplied NiMH battery, charger, reduced-power mode and documented service resources form a persuasive package. The biggest qualification is terrain. A short-course body does not convert a difficult lawn into a suitable circuit, and the absence of front-wheel drive should be part of the choice rather than a surprise after the first loose-surface session.

Our five category scores evaluate starting equipment, beginner controls, recreational-use fit, service documentation and complete-purchase value for that named buyer. They do not score measured speed, crash resistance or long-term reliability. Mad Toys and Hobbies supplies independent seller coverage of the matching current SKU, while Traxxas establishes the hardware and operating requirements. Amazon's API establishes the complete-car listing and dated offer. Keep those roles separate when reading the recommendation: our judgment is about how the documented purchase fits your plans, not somebody else's testing rebranded as ours.

Skip this version if you have already decided you need a brushless 4WD truck, a specific club race chassis or serious lawn coverage. Consider it if you want a practical first platform and will use its stock power equipment. Start with the supplied pack, conservative controls and a repeatable route. Buy additional equipment only when experience identifies the gap. On those terms the Slash has a strong case: enough vehicle to explore the hobby, with a reasonably clear list of what remains between delivery and the first usable session.

BEFORE YOU ORDER /

The questions worth asking.

Is 58234-8 brushless or four-wheel drive?

It is a brushed rear-drive 2WD complete truck with a Titan 12T 550 and XL-5. Check the part number because other Slash vehicles use different drivetrains.

What power equipment is included?

The current package supplies a 3000mAh seven-cell NiMH battery and four-amp USB-C charger. Four AA transmitter cells and a suitable USB-C input supply are still required.

Does this Slash include TSM?

No. This version uses the TQ two-channel radio. XL-5 Training Mode reduces motor output, but does not provide stability correction.

Should I use the speed gearing for lawn driving?

Start with factory gearing. Dense lawn adds drag; changing the site or vehicle category may be more appropriate than fitting a taller speed pinion.

Is the current body clipless?

Yes. The current official 58234-8 package documents a clipless finished short-course body with reinforcements. Older Slash body arrangements should not be assumed identical.

Is this a tested durability score?

No. The five scores assess the documented purchase for a first recreational short-course buyer. We have not run crash, speed or long-term reliability tests.
